Persian Gene
A team of geneticists
at a prominent university made an unexpected discovery while sequencing ancient
DNA from human remains found across Europe and the Middle East. They noticed
certain genetic markers that are most common in modern day Persian and Iranian
populations showing up in European samples dating back thousands of years.
Upon further analysis,
they determined that these Persian-associated markers were brought to Europe
through migrations from the Near East during the Neolithic era and Bronze Age. The
frequencies of these markers then increased progressively over time, suggesting
positive selection pressures that made these variants more successful in
European populations.
The lead researcher
summarized their findings at a press conference:
"It appears that
Western populations have been slowly but steadily accruing genetic
contributions from Persia and the Near East over the last 5,000-10,000 years.
This shows that the human race has literally been 'chasing the West' from a
genetic standpoint, with the Western gene pool absorbing and concentrating
lineages originating in Iran and surrounding regions."
The study made
headlines around the world. Some populist politicians raised alarm about the
findings and claimed this was evidence that European identity was under threat.
However, the scientists involved emphasized that these Persian-related markers
and contributions were just part of the ongoing mixing of human populations
that has always occurred. Additionally, they pointed out that focusing on tracing
specific alleles misses the complexity of human migration history.
While more research is
needed, the initial discovery does suggest the Iranian plateau and Near East
was a significant source for the modern European gene pool. It provides new
evidence that Western civilizations owe some part of their origins and
development to historical contacts with Persian and related cultures. Whether
this multi-millennia gene flow continues to occur or taper off may depend on
current geopolitics in the region.
