Details: |
During a London event, Meta confirmed that Llama 3, the latest iteration of its generative AI model, is set to launch soon. Llama is Meta’s open-source large language model that is available for free for research and commercial use. Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said “there will be a number of different models with different capabilities, different versatilities [released] during the course of this year, starting really very soon”. Chris Cox, the Chief Product Officer, said Llama 3 will be used in many of Meta's products, aiming to make it a key part of their technology. Llama 3 is designed to be much stronger than it’s previous version, with 140 billion parameters which will help it handle a wider variety of questions. |
Our Thoughts: |
Meta's earlier move to open-source AI is a clever and important step that could really shake up the AI world. By letting others use and improve one of the top AI models for free, Meta is sparking more competition and faster advances in technology. Many believe that open-source AI, which anyone can contribute to and use, will eventually outdo private AI systems like those from OpenAI and Anthropic. As more people use Llama 3, Meta will get more and more data to enhance their models. This approach could turn out to be a winning strategy for Meta. |
