OpenAI launches GPT-4o mini

Evolving AI: OpenAI introduces GPT-4o mini, a cheaper and faster AI model, promising improved efficiency for developers and consumers.
Key Points:
OpenAI unveils GPT-4o mini, targeting developers and consumers.

The model surpasses industry-leading small AI models in reasoning tasks.

GPT-4o mini is cost-efficient, significantly cheaper than its predecessors.

etails:

OpenAI's new GPT-4o mini, launched on Thursday, promises high efficiency and affordability. Available to both developers and consumers, it outperforms existing small AI models in reasoning tasks for text and vision. Developers prefer small models for their speed and cost benefits, which are crucial for repetitive, high-volume tasks. Scoring 82% on MMLU and 87% on MGSM, GPT-4o mini surpasses competitors like Gemini 1.5 Flash and Claude 3 Haiku. It is 60% cheaper than GPT-3.5 Turbo, supporting text and vision with planned future expansions. Priced at 15 cents per million input tokens, it offers a 128,000-token context window, enhancing utility for developers.

Why it matters:

There has been a recent trend where many AI companies are opting to develop smaller AI models instead of larger ones. By feeding these models finely tuned training data and using synthetic data, companies are able to produce these models efficiently. This constant optimization is one of the reasons they are able to reduce the prices at which they offer their models. According to Sam Altman, eventually, the costs will be close to zero.
