Humanoid
A humanoid is a non-human entity with human
form or characteristics. Originally used to describe fossils that resembled,
but weren’t identical to, the human skeleton, the term now encompasses anything
with distinctly human traits. These traits include opposable thumbs, binocular
vision, and bipedalism (the ability to walk upright). Humanoids can also
include human-animal hybrids or chimeras. In science fiction, extra-terrestrial
lifeforms are often portrayed as humanoid due to convergent evolution. While no
known humanoid species exists outside the genus Homo, the concept speculates
that similar evolutionary pressures could lead to intelligent, bipedal beings.
For instance, American psychologist Harry Jerison suggested sapient dinosaurs
could have evolved. However, this remains theoretical.
